The house
Leather that is meant to be carried, not stored.
Tannery House is a small range of full-grain cowhide bags and small goods, cut and finished in short runs and sold by enquiry from Hong Kong. Our line is short on purpose: a tote, a crossbody, a belt, a backpack, a bifold.
What we make
The bench works in full-grain and vegetable-tanned cowhide, plus English bridle leather for belts and wallets. Full grain means the top layer of the hide is left intact, so the grain you see is the animal's own — scarred, veined, and different from panel to panel. Vegetable tanning uses tree tannins rather than chrome salts; the leather starts firm and pale, then darkens into a deep patina as it takes oil from your hands, sun, and rain. Pull-up hides are stuffed with wax, so they lighten where the bag folds and settle back when it relaxes.
Every seam is saddle stitched by hand on the stress points — the strap roots, the belt loop, the gusset — and machine stitched only where a long straight run needs the speed. Saddle stitching is two needles working opposite directions through the same holes, so a broken thread stays broken instead of unravelling the seam. Edges are bevelled, sanded, then burnished with wax and friction until the edge seals. Hardware is solid brass or nickel where the piece needs to hold load, never plated pot metal.
How a piece gets chosen
Sourcing
We buy from tanneries we have visited or worked with for years, and we ask for the tanning method and the hide's origin in writing before a sample is cut.
Sampling
A new shape is cut in scrap leather first, then in the real hide. We carry the sample for two weeks before it goes on this site — a bag that cannot survive a commute does not make the range.
Quality control
Each piece is checked at three points: after cutting, after stitching, and after burnishing. We pull on every strap, open and close every closure, and look for skipped stitches, uneven edge colour, and loose rivets.
Small runs
Runs are typically ten to forty pieces per colour. When a hide lot is finished, the piece waits for the next tannery delivery rather than switching to a cheaper hide.
What we do not do
- We do not hoard stock to create scarcity, and we do not quote a lead time we cannot hold.
- We do not pass off corrected-grain or embossed split leather as full grain. If a piece is pebbled, it is pebbled by the tannery and we say so.
- We do not dropship from a third party and put our mark on someone else's carton.
- We do not sell exotic hides, and we do not claim a piece is handmade when the seam was run on a machine.
- We do not throw a piece away because a seam failed. Repair comes first, and we will tell you plainly when a repair is the better answer than a replacement.

You write, we answer
Send the piece name or SKU, colour, quantity and destination country. We confirm stock and the exact colour of the hide lot in the reply, usually within one working day.
Reply target: 1 working day -
Invoice, then the bench
Once you accept the written confirmation we send a formal invoice. Nothing is charged on this site. Standard packing is three working days from cleared payment; monogrammed pieces add two to three days because the stamp is cut and set by hand.
Packing: 3 working days -
Packed to arrive
Each piece goes into a cotton dust bag, then a rigid carton with the leather supported so the straps are not compressed. A care card carries the conditioning and water-spotting notes for that hide.
Tracked courier, from Hong Kong -
After it lands
Wear it. If a seam or a fastener fails, write to us before you do anything else — the repair and re-stitch route is on our returns page, and most jobs are turned around in two to three weeks.
Returns window: 14 days
